It looks like the MSN certificate got expired for pidgin.
Please remove the file omega.contacts.msn.com. present under /root/.purple/certificates/x509/tls_peers/ or /home/username/.purple/certificates/x509/tls_peers/
Download the same from http://files.andreineculau.com/projects/pidgin/omega.contacts.msn.com.txt. Once it has been downloaded, move it as omega.contacts.msn.com from omega.contacts.msn.com.txt.
Restart Pidgin, it should work properly. π
This works, thanks π
Nice! It did work! thanks π
It works here fine, thanks!
for some cases, it’s good enough just to remove certificates
http://sourcefield.blogspot.com/2010/11/certificate-for-omegacontactsmsncom.html
sometimes is good enough to remove certificates and it can be removed from Pidgin menu:

Thank you. Worked well.
Thanks, it worked perfectly!
I also have had the same problem for a couple of days, until I found the solution on your blog. It works!! Thank you very much.
thanks ;D
Thank you, that fixed it.
Brilliant, thanks!
Still not working for me – either with the above cert file or by simply deleting it. π¦
um.. seems bit tricky!! have you tried rebooting the machine or by configuring with any other MSN account?
Same as above .. I got the error message 90% of the time .. sometimes, pidgin is able to connect.
I’m using windows 7. I’ve reinstalled Pidgin rinstallation , and removed my .purple directory.
just keep hitting reconnect, eventually it will work… it’s been happening for several days now. the first few times i deleted the .com file, but in the last 2 days i just continually hit ‘reconnect’ , sometimes it works after 3-4 tries sometimes 10. but it works every time π
doesn’t work for me.
Which distribution of Linux you use?
I use Linux Mint 7 Gloria. Both ICQ and MSN have failed now. MSn reads MSN isn’t availabe now try later and ICQ reads authentification failed.
Still doesn’t work for me, have deleted the Omega file and downloaded the new one, nothing, deleted both MSN and ICQ account and installed them againm nothing. Updated Pidgin from the net, nothing.
Worked perfectly for me, thanks!
Thanks!
[…] I found the fix to it here. […]
Finally, something that actually works! Tried the other suggestions of just removing the old certificates, but that did sfa.
Cheers!
Ok, this worked for a little while and then stopped again. Please see the following for an alternate (preferred) method: http://squidsrants.blogspot.com/2010/11/pidgin-msn-and-other-protocols.html
Many thanks … works perfect π
It works, thank you.
I just Delete and add the account again
All work’s fine for me
Manage Accounts or Ctrl+A > Delete my msn Account and >Add again
UBUNTU 10.10
pidgin 2.7.3
Original situation worked for a short time.
Squid-Rants worked for a short time as well.
Noenmaster’s is currently working fine, and I’m on a Windows XP with Pidgen 2.7.5.
Thank you very much. I didn’t have to restart Pidgin, just disabled and enabled my MSN account.
Many Thanks sabarish4u
Removed omega.contacts.msn.com on Friday, been chatting all weekend, today busy chatting I go AFK for a few minutes and have the same message again: “Unable to validate certificate
The certificate for omega.contacts.msn.com could not be validated. The certificate chain presented is invalid.”
Did the same, deleted omega.contacts.msn.com and seems to be fine for now, just wander how long until that pops up again.
Works great!
